Tintri's CK setting sights on VAS expanding in APAC

Tintri announced earlier this month the appointment of a new Senior Sales Director for Asia Pacific. Striking while the iron is hot, DSA contacted the new senior director Chee Keong (CK) Chan for a quick discussion about his plans for the Asia Pacific region.

As Senior Sales Director, Chan is responsible for driving growth and opportunities for the company’s products and solutions in Australia, New Zealand, ASEAN, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India and South Korea. Being a curious bunch as we are, we wanted to find out why he would join a hardware company, after an impressive list of achievements at many major software companies, including Panzura, EMC Isilon, Data Domain and NetApp.

“My background is all related to the storage and appliance hardware industry in which software is the embedded Operating System and File System. I wanted the opportunity take my past experiences in these companies and channel them into a visionary start-up business. Tintri has provided me with that opportunity.”

We were certainly very impressed with his track record. According to the press release by Tintri, Chan was a Senior Sales Director at Panzura and before that, responsible for building the vertical and channel strategy for Asia at EMC Isilon.

With such a notable résumé, we wanted to know if he has any new ideas about expanding Asia Pacific, and any collaborations he might have set his vision on.

“Virtualisation is the new norm. The SEA/APAC market represents a great opportunity for our VAS solution. Currently, we’re in talks with local resellers and channel partners in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand to market Tintri in these markets. The response from resellers has been extremely positive and we’re excited at the prospect of entering these markets."

“Globally, Tintri collaborates with technology partners such as VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, Red Hat and OpenStack to allow customers to manage multiple workloads across multiple hypervisors on one storage system. Additional vendors we have already established local relationships with are Veeam and Zerto.”

One point that we discussed was the target market for Tintri within Asia Pacific. We had our doubts about the APAC market being ready for a product made only for VM.

“We’re seeing a strong demand for VM storage products globally and SEA/APAC is a growing region for these type of products as the storage market in these regions mature. Organisations in SEA/APAC are looking for storage solutions specifically built for virtualised workloads.”

“Tintri’s customers globally include both SMEs and big enterprises. Our customers span across industries including Financial Services, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Media, Technology, Education and Public Sector. These are also sectors that we will be targeting in SEA/APAC.”

In the world of flash vendors, the market is already quite saturated with many big names. Tintri being a startup means they are competing in a very crowded industry. However, Chan believes in the potential Tintri has. “Tintri is the only native VM-aware Storage (VAS) in the marketplace that is able to achieve a per VM functionality, visibility and Quality of Service (QoS) since 2008.”

“While Tintri allows customers to have a choice - to select between hybrid-flash array and all-flash array - depending on their storage needs, it is the simplicity of our VAS solution that is our key differentiator against other vendors. Tintri’s VAS solution is built specifically for virtualised applications and with none of the limitations of traditional physical-first storage. On Tintri, virtual machines will perform 6x faster, pack 10x more densely and take 98% less management.”

Although it’s still in the early days for CK in Tintri, we hope that this visionary can heat up the market with some new approach and we certainly look forward to seeing progresses within the market in this region. DSA wishes you the best!
